How does the app work?
When you feel the urge to text your ex, open Don't Text Your Ex. The app will show you context-aware messages based on your situation - how long since the breakup, your stated goal, time of day, and more. It helps you reflect before you act.
How many intercepts do I get for free?
One a day, counting both 'I want to text them' and 'They contacted me'. Reaching the last screen uses one; leaving before then doesn't. It resets at midnight. Once you've used it, you can watch a short ad for one more. That rewarded ad is the only ad in the app and you choose whether to see it — there are no banners and nothing interrupts you. To drop the daily limit entirely there is Control Pass, or The Next You.
What are Control Passes?
A Control Pass removes the daily limit for a set period: 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, or 30 days. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It starts when you buy it; if one is already running, the new one is added on after it. It covers intercepts only — The Next You is a separate subscription.
What is The Next You?
A monthly subscription for what comes after holding back. Each day you answer "Did you look after yourself today?", and you set goals in areas like exercise, work, looks, money, hobbies and people, moving toward them one step at a time with today's tasks. In The You Back Then, the messages you didn't send come back to you a week after you wrote them. It also removes the daily limit, so there's no need to buy a Control Pass alongside it. You can subscribe two weeks after you first open the app, or sooner once you've held back enough. It requires signing in with Apple or Google (on Android, Google), because the subscription and your records live on that account.
How do I cancel the subscription?
Go to Settings › SUBSCRIPTION & PASSES › Manage, which opens your subscriptions in the App Store or Google Play. You can also cancel in your iPhone's Settings app › [your name] › Subscriptions, or in Google Play › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. Finishing the growth track does not cancel it for you — it keeps renewing until you cancel. After it ends, you can still view your records.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by the store, not by us. On iPhone, request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Android, within 48 hours of the purchase you can request one from your order history in Google Play; after 48 hours, email us at the address below.
Do I need an account?
Not for the free app or for Control Passes — those work with no account at all. Only The Next You subscription requires signing in with Apple or Google (on Android, Google). If you subscribe and later reinstall, sign in from Settings and your records come back. If you're asked for your recovery code, enter it.
Is my data private?
Without an account, everything stays on your phone and never reaches us. An account is only needed for The Next You subscription, so your records survive a lost phone. Even then, the messages you didn't send, your notes, and your photos are encrypted on your phone before they're uploaded — we hold them as unreadable data and cannot open them. What happens if I delete my account?
Your account and everything backed up to the server — records and photos — are erased right away. Records on this phone stay until you remove the app. Deleting the account does not cancel your subscription: cancel that separately in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions, or you will be charged again on the next billing date.
Can I reset my data?
Yes. Go to Settings and tap 'Start over'. It deletes your breakup date, your hold and send records, your last-contact dates, your goal-change history, urge check-ins and unsent messages, and takes you back to the start. If you have The Next You records, you choose what happens to them: 'Keep The Next You records', 'Archive The Next You records', or 'Erase everything'. If you're signed in, the backup is cleared too, so a new device won't get them back. If another device is already signed in, do Start over there as well. This cannot be undone.
What is the recovery code?
12 words that let you unlock your encrypted photos and writing (unsent messages, notes, goals) on a new phone. The key lives on your phone (on iPhone, also in iCloud Keychain if it's turned on), so if it doesn't come back after you lose or replace the phone, those items can't be opened without the code. We can't recover them for you — write the words down and keep them somewhere safe. On the new phone, sign in, then go to Settings › Restore with your recovery code.
How do I restore my purchase?
Control Pass: go to Settings › SUBSCRIPTION & PASSES › Control Pass and tap Restore purchases on that screen — no account needed. The Next You: go to Settings › SUBSCRIPTION & PASSES › Restore purchases and sign in with the account you subscribed with. Either way, make sure you're signed in to the store with the same Apple ID or Google account you used for the original purchase.
How do I change or turn off notifications?
Go to Settings › NOTIFICATIONS › How often and choose Every day, Now and then, or Off. The late-night nudge comes around 11pm, and only if you've struggled in the past week and haven't used 'I want to text them' or 'They contacted me' that day. If you subscribe to The Next You, a reminder for the daily question also comes around 9pm if you haven't answered it yet.
The app isn't working correctly
Try closing and reopening the app. If the issue persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling — but if you have been using the app without an account, uninstalling erases your records for good. If you want to keep them, email us first at the address below.
